Childhood and Military Education
Viktor Matveevich Masich was born on February 19, 1917, in Khabarovsk, Russia, to a working-class family. As a young man, he excelled in academics and graduated from high school at the age of 19. In 1936, inspired by the call of duty and patriotism, Masich joined the 1st Military School of Pilots, named after Comrade Myasnikov, in Kacha. He graduated with honors in 1939, eager to serve his country.
Heroism in the Soviet-Finnish War
Masich's exceptional skills and unwavering determination were put to the test during the Soviet-Finnish War of 1939-1940. As a squadron navigator in the 68th Separate Fighter Aviation Regiment, he conducted 53 courageous reconnaissance missions deep into enemy territory. In the fierce aerial battles, he demonstrated his bravery and tactical prowess, shooting down four enemy aircraft.
Awarded Hero of the Soviet Union
For his exceptional valor and contributions to the war effort, Masich was awarded the prestigious title of Hero of the Soviet Union on April 7, 1940. This recognition cemented his status as a national hero and an inspiration to his fellow soldiers.
World War II and Post-War Service
Masich's military service continued throughout World War II. He joined the fight against Nazi Germany in June 1941 and became a member of the Communist Party in 1941. During the conflict, he claimed eight enemy aircraft, including one via aerial ramming.
After the war, Masich pursued a career in flight testing and engineering. He graduated from the Zhukovsky Military Air Engineering Academy in 1943 and joined the Flight Research Institute of the Air Force. Throughout his illustrious career, he conducted extensive testing on captured enemy aircraft and contributed significantly to the development of Soviet aircraft.
Tragic Death
On March 18, 1948, tragedy struck during a test flight of a modified MiG-9 aircraft equipped with an RD-10F engine. Captain Masich's plane experienced a catastrophic failure, and he perished in the crash.
