Victor Emmanuel, Duke of Savoy

Victor Emmanuel was born in Naples on February 12, 1937. He was the son of Umberto II, the last King of Italy, and Marie José of Belgium. He was created Prince of Naples at birth.

Exile and Return

During World War II, Victor Emmanuel and his family were forced to flee Italy due to the threat of German invasion. They moved to Switzerland, where they remained until the end of the war. After the Italian monarchy was abolished in 1946, Victor Emmanuel became the heir to the defunct throne. As such, he was barred from entering Italy under the terms of the new constitution. He was finally allowed to return to his homeland in 2002.

Corruption Scandal

In 2006, Victor Emmanuel was arrested in connection with a corruption scandal. He was accused of bribery, forgery, and prostitution. His cousin, Simeon II of Bulgaria, was also implicated in the case. In 2007, Victor Emmanuel and his son filed a lawsuit against the Italian government, seeking 260 million euros in damages and the return of property that had been confiscated from the royal family after the war. The lawsuit was widely criticized, and the Italian government vowed to counterclaim against the House of Savoy for its alleged complicity with the fascist regime.

Marriage and Family

In 1960, Victor Emmanuel met Marina Doria at a yacht club in Geneva. They married in 1971 in Tehran, Iran. In 1972, their son, Emmanuel Filiberto, was born.

Death

Victor Emmanuel died in Switzerland on February 3, 2024, at the age of 87.
