Asnar I Galíndez, Count of Aragon, Urgell, and Cerdanya

Count of Aragon (809-820)

Asnar I Galíndez was appointed Count of Aragon in 809 by King Louis the Pious of Aquitaine, replacing the deceased Count Aureolus. Asnar's territory was conquered by Amrus ibn Yusuf, the wali of Zaragoza and Huesca, in the same year.

Recovery of Aragon and Death of Sentul (810-816)

In 810, Asnar I successfully recaptured Aragon with the help of Emperor Charlemagne. Around 812, he married his daughter Matrona to Garcia Galíndez, a member of the Velascotenes family. However, tragedy struck in 816 when Garcia, accused of adultery, killed Asnar's eldest son, Sentul. Garcia was imprisoned but escaped in 820 and fled to King Íñigo I of Pamplona.

Overthrow and Flight to Urgell and Cerdanya (820)

With the support of the King of Pamplona and the Banu Qasi family, Garcia led a revolt against Asnar I, culminating in his overthrow in 820. Exiled from Aragon, Asnar I sought refuge at the court of Emperor Louis the Pious, who appointed him Count of Urgell and Cerdanya.

Count of Urgell and Cerdanya (820-833)

Asnar I's reign in Urgell and Cerdanya is poorly documented. He may have participated in the 822 expedition that conquered lands north of the Segre River. Between 824 and 833, he handed over the counties to his son, Galindo I Asnárez, possibly remaining as a co-ruler.

Later Life and Family (833-839)

Asnar I Galíndez's death is presumed to have occurred in 839 in Urgell. His children included:

Sentul (d. 816)

Galindo I Asnárez (d. 867)
Matrona (m. Garcia I of Aragon)

Uncertainty surrounds the familial relationships of Asnar I Galíndez due to confusion between him and Asnar Sánchez, the Duke of Vasconia. However, he is sometimes considered the father of Garcia Asnárez, Count of Comminges, and Sancha, a daughter possibly married to the Count of Bigorre.
