Birth and Family Background
Viktor Vladimirovich Vanslov was born on May 16, 1923, in Vyatka, Russia, to Vladimir Vladimirovich Vanslov, a Doctor of Philological Sciences and Associate Professor, and Maria Leonidovna Vanslova (née Fesechko), also a Doctor of Philological Sciences and Associate Professor.
Early Life and Education
From 1933 to 1939, Vanslov lived with his parents in Kalinin (now Tver), where he pursued his interests in drawing and piano. In 1939, he moved to Moscow and enrolled in the theoretical and compositional department of the Music College at the Moscow Conservatory, graduating in 1940. He then joined the historical and theoretical faculty of the Moscow Conservatory, graduating with honors in 1948.
Simultaneously with his musical studies, Vanslov pursued a keen interest in aesthetics, studying at the Institute of Philosophy of the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1946-1947.
Academic Career
Early Work and ContributionsVanslov embarked on his professional career in 1947, teaching at the Music College at the Moscow Conservatory while completing his graduate studies. From 1948 to 1950, he served as Senior Editor at the Music Publishing House ("Muzyz"), and from 1950 to 1958, as a Junior and then Senior Researcher at the Institute of Philosophy of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1957, he became a Visiting Professor of Aesthetics at the Moscow Conservatory.
Focus on the Arts
Despite his academic focus on music and aesthetics, Vanslov maintained a deep connection with visual art. He studied at the art history department of Moscow University, attended exhibitions and artists' studios, and developed extensive connections within the art world. This multidisciplinary approach influenced his early books on aesthetics, such as "Content and Form in Art" (1966) and "The Problem of Beauty" (1957).
All-Russian Theater Society (1958-1963)
From 1958 to 1963, Vanslov worked at the All-Russian Theater Society, where he specialized in aesthetics, theater criticism, and theater art. During this time, he extensively studied ballet, observing rehearsals, attending performances, and reading extensively about the art form.
Research Institute of Theory and History of Fine Arts
Leadership and AdministrationIn 1963, Vanslov joined the Research Institute of Theory and History of Fine Arts (a part of the Russian Academy of Arts). He served as Head of the Theory Department (1963-1973), Deputy Director for Science (1973-1988), and has been the Director since 1988. Under his leadership, the institute has expanded its research scope, established new departments, and attracted a highly skilled team of scholars.
