Early Life and EducationVincent Bugliosi was born in Minnesota to an Italian immigrant family. He graduated from the University of Miami in 1956 and the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law in 1964.
The Manson Trial
In 1969, Bugliosi took on the high-profile case of Charles Manson and three female followers known as the "Family." As deputy district attorney of Los Angeles County, he successfully prosecuted the defendants for the murders of actress Sharon Tate and six others. The guilty verdicts led to death sentences, later commuted to life imprisonment.
Legal Career
During his eight years as a prosecutor, Bugliosi had an exceptional winning streak, triumphing in 105 out of 106 felony trials. He ran unsuccessfully for Los Angeles County District Attorney in 1972 and California Attorney General in 1974.
Private Practice and Writing Career
After the Manson trial, Bugliosi joined the law firm Steinberg & Bugliosi as a partner. In 1974, he published "Helter Skelter," a best-selling documentary about the Tate murders.

In 1985, he presented a three-day British television show arguing the case against Lee Harvey Oswald for the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Bugliosi became a vocal critic of former President George W. Bush. In "The Betrayal of America," he argued that the Supreme Court's decision to halt the Florida recount in the 2000 presidential election was unlawful. His 2008 book, "The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder," proposed criminal charges against Bush for American casualties in the Iraq War.
