A New Chapter for a Romantic Heartthrob
Vincent Pérez, the renowned French actor known for his roles as romantic leading men, has taken on a refreshing challenge in the comedy "Je Reste" ("I Stay"). In a departure from his traditional image, Pérez portrays a selfish and unlikeable husband whose wife leaves him.
"I was drawn to this role because it allowed me to transform myself and create a character that is both unlikeable and comical," Pérez explains. "My character is initially so focused on himself and his career that he quickly becomes a source of laughter."
Evolving Roles and a Desire for Age-Appropriate Depictions
With his forties approaching, Pérez is keen to shift away from playing youthful lovers. "It's time to stop pretending to be a young man on screen," he says. "I want roles that reflect my current stage in life as the head of a large family."
Directing: A Path to Fulfillment
Beyond acting, Pérez has found a new passion in directing. "Directing allows me to fill a void that I felt as an actor, despite continuing to play roles in film and theater," he says. "It's a way to create something more complete."
Pérez's directorial debut, "Angel-A," was a whimsical tale of an idealistic young woman. Currently, he is working on two screenplays, one written by himself and the other by his wife.
Ideal Collaborators and the Female Gaze
On working with Sophie Marceau in "Je Reste," Pérez says, "We have a deep connection and understanding, making it a seamless collaboration."
Asked about his ideal female acting partners, Pérez pauses and reflects. "I would love to work with Isabelle Huppert or Ludivine Sagnier," he says.
A European at Heart
Despite his diverse background, Pérez identifies as a European. "I have found a country where I feel comfortable living and working: France," he says. "Am I French? Yes and no. I am a citizen of the Old World."
Favorite Roles and the Lure of Hollywood
When asked about his favorite roles, Pérez mentions those he has done with Patrice Chéreau, including "Queen Margot." "I would love to work in America," he says regarding a potential Hollywood career. "But I like feeling creatively free in France."
Impressions of Russia
Reflecting on his visits to Russia, Pérez notes both the duality and depth of the Russian people. "On the one hand, I see the superficiality of Europeans compared to the depth of Russians," he says. "On the other hand, I realize the challenges Russians face living in a society so different from ours. I would love to return and see the changes that have occurred."
