Early Life and EducationVirgil Abloh was born on September 30, 1980, in Rockford, Illinois, to Ghanaian immigrant parents. His mother was a seamstress, sparking his early interest in fashion. Abloh excelled in his studies, graduating from Boylan Catholic High School in 1998 and the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering in 2002. In 2006, he obtained a master's degree in architecture from the Illinois Institute of Technology.
Career Trajectory
Rise to Prominence (2009-2013)After graduating, Abloh interned at the esteemed Italian fashion house, Fendi, where he crossed paths with Kanye West. They collaborated on various creative projects, leading to Abloh's appointment as creative director of West's creative agency, DONDA, in 2010. Abloh also became the art director for Jay-Z and Kanye West's joint album, "Watch the Throne." In 2012, he founded Pyrex Vision, a short-lived streetwear company.
Off-White and Success (2013-2017)
In 2013, Abloh launched his first fashion label, Off-White, a high-end streetwear brand. The brand quickly gained recognition for its unique designs and was a finalist for the LVMH Prize in both 2014 and 2015.
