Belgian Artist in Russia: Henri Gronkel
Henri Gronkel, a Belgian artist, made a significant impact during his tenure in Russia. A skilled portraitist and genre painter, he arrived in Saint Petersburg in 1849.
Academic Recognition and Early Success
In 1850, Gronkel's exceptional work earned him the esteemed title of Academician from the Imperial Academy of Arts (IAH) for his "Female Portrait" (Hermitage Museum) and "Portrait of V. N. Panin."
Religious and Genre Paintings
Between 1852 and 1853, Gronkel contributed eleven icons to the Sveaborg Fortress Church. His diverse range of works also included "Bard," "Portrait of Mr. Derin," and "Portrait of Dr. Ouw," exhibited at the Academy of Arts in 1852.
Collections and Legacy
Gronkel's works can be found in prestigious institutions, including the Museum of the Russian Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg ("Portrait of K. A. Thon") and the Hermitage Museum ("Portrait of Two Children"). The Artistic and Pedagogical Toy Museum in Sergiev Posad holds two portraits by Gronkel: "Count Vladimir Viktorovich Panin" (1849) and "Countess Natalya Viktorovna Panina" (1850).
Return Home and Later Years
After his time in Russia, Gronkel returned to Belgium and lived in Brussels. From 1879, he resided in London before eventually returning to his home country. He passed away in 1890 in Schaerbeek, just outside Brussels.
