Vitaly: A Renaissance Monk and Polemicist
Born in the 16th century in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Vitaly's worldly name remains unknown. He initially resided as a monk in the Unev Monastery before becoming a hieromonk from 1603-1607.
A Scholarly Monk
Vitaly was highly educated, fluent in Greek and Latin. He actively participated in the Brotherhood in the early 17th century and served as a hierodeacon at the Holy Spirit Brotherhood Monastery. As the Abbot of the Dubensky Monastery in modern-day Ukraine, he donated his entire wealth to the church.
Literary Contributions
In 1604-1605, Vitaly compiled the сборник entitled "Dioptra, or The Mirror and Reflection of Human Life in the Afterlife." Published in 1612 in Euje, the book consisted of a preface, philosophical reflections, sermons, and translations from Greek and Latin. The text was interspersed with Vitaly's own moralistic epigrams.
Legacy and Influence
"Dioptra" became widely disseminated in manuscript form and was later reprinted in Vilnius (1642), Kutenska Monastery (1651), and numerous times thereafter. Vitaly's untimely demise occurred around 1640, leaving behind a rich legacy as a monk, translator, poet, and a leading figure in the Orthodox polemical literature of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
