Early Life and Career
Birth and ChildhoodVitali Gabrielyan was born into a Belorussian family in Baku, Azerbaijan, in 1945. As a youth, he exhibited a keen interest in checkers, inspired by the vibrant checkers scene in the Soviet Union.
Training and Initial Success
In 1958, Gabrielyan began formal checkers training at the Baku Palace of Pioneers and Schoolchildren under the tutelage of renowned coach Nikolai Khachaturov. His talent quickly emerged, and he claimed national junior titles in 1960 and 1961.
Soviet Dominance
USSR ChampionGabrielyan's exceptional skills soon propelled him to the top of Soviet checkers. He made his mark in the adult championship in 1963 and went on to conquer the coveted title four times: in 1966, 1969, 1973, and 1977.
International Recognition
His success extended beyond the domestic arena. Gabrielyan earned the prestigious international grandmaster title in 1968 and achieved notable results in international checkers competitions, becoming Azerbaijan's champion and participating in the USSR championship finals.
Displacement and Armenian Roots
Relocation to ArmeniaIn the late 1980s, due to the escalating conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh, Gabrielyan was forced to relocate to Yerevan, Armenia. There, he became the head coach of the Armenian national checkers team and rose to the position of vice-chairman of the Armenian Checkers Federation.
Champion of Brazil
In 1994, Gabrielyan moved to Marjina Gorka, Belarus, and represented the country in international competitions. His impressive accolades include becoming the Brazilian champion in 1999 while playing for the Brazilian club "São André."
Later Career and Legacy
World Intellectual GamesIn 2008, Gabrielyan and his son, Vladislav, represented Belarus at the first World Intellectual Games in Beijing.
Author and Educator
Throughout his career, Gabrielyan has penned 12 instructional manuals and authored the book "Checkers in the USSR Armed Forces." He has also established the "Debut" checkers club and organizes the annual international checkers tournament "Listopad" in Marjina Gorka.
