Early Life and Career

- Born on May 9, 1890, in Alexandrovsk-Grushevsky, Russian Empire (now Shakhty).

- Son of a miner, joined Mikhail Kotlikov's circus in 1898 and excelled in acrobatic jumps.

Emergence as a Clown

- Met Anatoly Durov in 1906 and began performing satiric clown skits.

- Debuted at Moscow's Nikitin Circus in 1911 and set a world record by somersaulting over three elephants in 1914.

Innovations in Clowning

- Developed a unique clownish mask in 1919 with artist Boris Erdman, combining vibrancy, buffoonery, and realism.

- In 1920, performed Mayakovsky's "Alphabet" and "World Class Struggle Championship."

Revolutionary Engagements

- Led frontline artistic brigades during the Russian Civil War, performing satire and jumping over obstacles.

- Featured in "Mystery-Buff" (1921) at Meyerhold's theater and "Ten Flaming Years" (1927) at the Leningrad Circus.

- Portrayed the anarchist Nestor Makhno in the pantomime "Makhnovshchina" (1929).
