Early Life and Education
Witold Zglenicki was born in the Mazovian village of Wargowo Stara, Poland. In 1870, he graduated from the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics at the University of Warsaw. Five years later, he received his degree with honors from the Mining Institute in Saint Petersburg.
Career in Poland and Riga
Zglenicki began his professional career in Poland, working as an engineer and geologist. He later moved to Riga, Latvia, where he continued to develop his skills in the mining industry.
Exploring the Caspian Sea
In 1893, Zglenicki relocated to Baku, Azerbaijan, where he would spend the rest of his life. As a pioneer in the field of petroleum geology, he proposed the existence of vast oil reserves beneath the Caspian Sea.
Innovation and Engineering
Zglenicki's groundbreaking work led to the development of the first offshore oil drilling platforms. His inventions laid the foundation for the modern offshore oil industry. He also discovered various mineral deposits in the region, including iron ore, pyrite, molybdenum, and gold.
Philanthropy
Zglenicki was a generous philanthropist who donated a substantial portion of his wealth to the Mianowski Fund. The fund supported scientific research, encyclopedic publishing projects, and a wide range of other initiatives.
Legacy and Death
Witold Zglenicki passed away in Baku from diabetes. He was buried in the village of Wola-Kiełpińska in Poland. His legacy as the "Polish Nobel" and a visionary geologist who revolutionized the oil industry lives on to this day.
