Vladimir Ariev: Ukrainian Politician and Journalist
Early Life and EducationVladimir Ariev was born in Kyiv, Ukraine. He graduated from Natural Science Lyceum No. 145 in 1992 and enrolled in the Physics Faculty of Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University. In 1996, he enrolled in the Institute of Journalism at the same university, earning a degree in journalism in 2002.
Journalistic Career
Ariev's journalistic career began in 1993 as an assistant correspondent for the BBC Ukrainian and Russian services. He later became a special correspondent and news presenter for the Internews Media Center and various other outlets, including UT-1, Inter, and Channel 1+1. From 2003 to 2004, he worked as an independent journalist and produced the program "Non-Province" for STB and the weekly magazine "Mirror of the Week."
Political Career
Ariev entered politics in 2007 when he was elected as a People's Deputy of Ukraine for the Our Ukraine - People's Self-Defense bloc. He headed the Subcommittee on Control over Reform, Personnel, and Resource Provision of Anticorruption and Organized Crime Agencies in the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian Parliament).
In 2012, Ariev was re-elected as a People's Deputy for the United Opposition "Batkivshchyna" in a single-mandate constituency in Kyiv. He was elected again in the 2014 snap parliamentary elections, representing the Petro Poroshenko Bloc, and became chairman of the Ukrainian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).
Ariev served as vice-president of PACE in 2015 and 2018, and as president of the Committee on Culture, Science, Education, and Media in 2016. He is a member of the European People's Party faction in PACE.
Controversies
Ariev has been involved in several controversies, including an incident in 2006 where Polish border guards seized suspected marijuana from him and his wife, and allegations of voting fraud in the Ukrainian Parliament.
In 2013, Ariev clashed with a supermarket employee and another customer over their use of Russian language. A deputy from the Party of Regions called for Ariev's expulsion from Parliament.
Family
Vladimir Ariev is married to journalist Natalya Fichyts and has a daughter who was born in 2000.
