Early Life and Education

Vladimir Gershonovich Drinfeld was born on February 14, 1954, in Kharkiv, Ukraine, to a family of academics. His father, Gershon Ikheleevich Drinfeld, was a mathematician and professor at Kharkiv University, and his mother, Frida Iosifovna Lutskaya-Litvak, was a philologist specializing in classical literature.

From an early age, Drinfeld displayed an exceptional aptitude for mathematics. At just 15 years old, he achieved the remarkable feat of becoming the absolute winner of the International Mathematical Olympiad in 1969. He went on to study at the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics at Moscow State University, graduating with a doctorate in 1978 under the supervision of Yuri I. Manin.

Obstacles and Emigration

Despite his brilliance, Drinfeld faced challenges in Moscow due to his Jewish heritage and difficulties obtaining residency. As a result, he was forced to leave the city and relocate to Ufa, where he taught mathematics at Bashkir State University. In 1981, he returned to Kharkiv and joined the B.I. Verkin Institute for Low Temperature Physics and Engineering of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, where he worked until 1999.

International Recognition and Breakthroughs

In 1988, Drinfeld defended his doctoral thesis at the Steklov Mathematical Institute. In recognition of his groundbreaking work, he was awarded the prestigious Fields Medal in 1990. Despite offers for positions in the West, Drinfeld declined at the time.

Emigration and Career in the United States

In 1998, Drinfeld emigrated to the United States, becoming a professor at the University of Chicago in that same year. He was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States in 2016 and a foreign member of the French Academy of Sciences.

Research Contributions

Drinfeld's research has had a profound impact on several fields of mathematics, including algebraic geometry, number theory, and mathematical physics. His most notable contributions include:

- Proving the Langlands conjecture for GL(2) over a function field

- Creating the theory of quantum groups, a new class of Hopf algebras

- Developing the Drinfeld-Sokolov theory and introducing the concept of the Drinfeld associator

Honors and Recognition

In addition to the Fields Medal, Drinfeld has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including:
