Early Life and Education
Vladimir Sergeyevich Gasilin was born on January 9, 1929, in the village of Troitskoye, Samara Region, Russia. His parents were Sergei Vasilyevich Gasilin (1903-1947) and Lyubov Alexeyevna Gasilina (1902-1968).
In 1952, Gasilin graduated from the Kuibyshev Medical Institute, now known as Samara State Medical University. He completed his clinical residency in therapy from 1952 to 1955.
Medical Career
Following his residency, Gasilin served as an assistant in the Department of Therapy at Kuibyshev Medical Institute. From 1965 to 1968, he headed the Department of Hospital Therapy at Kursk Medical Institute.
In 1968, Gasilin joined the Fourth Main Directorate under the USSR Ministry of Health. He held various positions, including head of the Department of Therapy at the Scientific and Educational Center (1968-1970), deputy head of the Fourth Main Directorate, chief physician of the directorate's special hospital (1970-1975), and chief therapist (1975-1977).
From 1977 to 1983, Gasilin was deputy director general of the All-Union Cardiological Scientific Center. From 1983 to 1992, he served as chief therapist of the Fourth Main Directorate under the USSR Ministry of Health.
In 1992, Gasilin was appointed chief therapist of the Medical Center of the Presidential Property Management Department. From 1999 to 2003, he was chief specialist in balneology. He currently serves as a consultant at the Medical Center.
Academic and Scientific Contributions
Gasilin's research focused on cardiology, therapy, balneology, and healthcare organization. He was one of the first in Russia to introduce vectorcardiography, electrocardiogram monitoring, and echocardiography into clinical practice.
He has authored over 300 scientific publications, including 30 monographs, textbooks, and reference books. He also contributed articles on ischemic heart disease and myocarditis to the Great Medical Encyclopedia.
Honors and Awards
Gasilin has been honored with numerous awards:- Member-correspondent of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences (1975)
- Academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (1997)
- L.G. Lang Prize of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences for "Intermediate Forms of Ischemic Heart Disease"
- A.L. Myasnikov Prize of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences for "Chronic Forms of Ischemic Heart Disease"
- Order of Lenin (1978)
- Two Orders of the Red Banner of Labor (1971, 1976)- Gold Medal of the USSR Exhibition of Economic Achievements (1980)
Personal Life
Gasilin married Vera Mikhailovna Gasilina in 1932. They have two daughters, Tatiana (born 1958) and Irina (born 1965).
In his spare time, Gasilin enjoys listening to classical music, particularly the works of Tchaikovsky, Glinka, and Bizet. He also enjoys spending time outdoors with his grandchildren and skiing in the winter.
