Vladimir Georgiev was a Bulgarian linguist and academic. He is well-known for his work in comparative-historical linguistics of Indo-European languages, including the Paleobalkan languages. He was one of the leaders of the spelling reform of the Bulgarian language in 1945. He was a professor at the University of Sofia "St. Kliment Ohridski".
Contributions and Research
Georgiev was the author of several unsuccessful attempts to decipher ancient scripts such as Linear B and the Phaistos Disc. He also attempted to interpret the languages of ancient Mediterranean civilizations, such as Etruscan and Linear A inscriptions, using the comparative method. Within Indo-European studies, he defended the relationship between the Balto-Slavic languages and the Germanic languages, and also conducted research on the Thracian language.
Editorial Work
Georgiev served as the chief editor of the "Short Bulgarian Encyclopedia" (1962-1969), the encyclopedia "A-Ya" (1974), and the encyclopedia "Bulgaria" (Vol. 1, 1978).
