Early Life and Education

Vadim Popov was born on January 3, 1954, in the village of Akulintsy, Mogilev Region, Belarus. He graduated from Mogilev State Pedagogical Institute in 1975, earning a degree in geography.

Military Service and Early Career

After graduating, Popov served in the Armed Forces. He then worked as a teacher at a boarding school in Shklov (1975-1976), as deputy director of Shklov Secondary School No. 3 (1977-1983), as an inspector for juvenile affairs at the Shklov District Internal Affairs Department (1983-1991), and as a teacher at a secondary school (1991-1994).

Political Career

Popov's political career began in 1991 when he became an assistant to Supreme Soviet of Belarus deputy Alexander Lukashenko. He later served as chief assistant to Lukashenko, who became President of Belarus, from 1994-1996.

In 1995, Popov was elected to the Supreme Soviet of the Republic of Belarus XIIIth convocation and led the "Zgoda" parliamentary group. He was also a member of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet.

Speaker of the House of Representatives

On November 28, 1996, Popov was elected Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus I convocation. He was re-elected to the House of Representatives in 2000 and 2004.

On November 16, 2004, Popov was elected Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus III convocation. He held this position until 2007, when he resigned due to health reasons.

President of the Handball Federation of Belarus

Popov has also been involved in sports, serving as President of the Handball Federation of Belarus since 2006.

Personal Life

Popov is married and has two sons.
