Birth and Early Life

Professor Vladimir A. Kozlov was born on July 20, 1940, in Novosibirsk, Russia. His parents were Alexander Ivanovich (1893-1970) and Galina Vasilievna (1906-1993).

Education and Career

Kozlov pursued a medical degree from Novosibirsk State Medical Institute in 1957. After graduating, he served as a clinical resident (1963-1965) and aspirant (1965-1968). He then worked as a junior research assistant at the same institute for two years, during which he defended his candidate's dissertation on post-embryonic and post-radiation changes in immune-competent tissues.

From 1970 to 1981, Kozlov was a senior research scientist and head of the immunopoiesis regulation laboratory at the Institute of Clinical and Experimental Medicine. He defended his doctoral dissertation on the humoral and cellular regulation of antibody production.

In 1981, Kozlov became Deputy Director for Scientific Work at the Institute of Clinical Immunology and remained in that position until 1993. Since 1993, he has served as Director of the same institute.

Scientific Contributions

Kozlov is a renowned specialist in the regulation of immune homeostasis in relation to the nervous, endocrine, and hematopoietic systems. His fundamental work has unveiled the mechanisms controlling the differentiation and proliferation of hematopoietic stem cells.

His systemic approach has yielded groundbreaking insights into the effects of hormones, neurohormones, and erythroid cells on immune regulation. In 1990, he registered the discovery of the regulation of the humoral immune response by a heterogeneous population of erythroid cells. He also isolated an immunosuppressive factor that inhibits the proliferation of B-cells.

Kozlov's research has earned him international recognition as an expert in macrophage immunoregulation. He was the first to demonstrate the modulating effects of macrophage-derived factors (IL-1, PGE2) on humoral response in vivo.

Kozlov is the author of approximately 700 scientific publications and holds 9 author's certificates and 8 patents. Some of his most notable publications include "Clinical Immunology in Internal Medicine" (1997) and "Immunoregulatory Properties of Erythroid Cells" (1997).
