Vladimir Shandra: Ukrainian Politician and Engineer

Early Life and Education

Vladimir Shandra was born in Ukraine in 1961. After graduating high school in 1980, he began his career as a grinder at the Ternopil Combine Plant. In 1981, he enrolled in the Moscow Engineering and Physics Institute, where he studied atomic power plants and installations until 1987. Later, he earned a Master's degree in Finance from the National Academy of Management in 2006.

Career in the Energy Sector

Upon graduating from the Moscow Engineering and Physics Institute in 1987, Shandra joined the Khmelnitsky Nuclear Power Plant. He rose through the ranks, holding various positions including reactor operator, senior engineer for repair and operation of equipment, and leading engineer for reactor management.

Political Involvement

In 2002, Shandra was elected to the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian Parliament) as a member of the "Our Ukraine" Bloc. He served as Deputy Chairman of the Parliament's Industrial Policy and Entrepreneurship Committee. From February 2005 to August 2006, he held the position of Minister of Industrial Policy of Ukraine.

Government Positions

Shandra continued his career in government, serving as an adviser to the President of Ukraine from 2006 to 2007. He then became the Minister for Emergencies and Population Protection from December 2007 to March 2010.

Governor of Kyiv Oblast

On March 2, 2014, Shandra was appointed Governor of Kyiv Oblast by the acting President of Ukraine, Oleksandr Turchynov. He resigned from this position on January 27, 2016, citing personal reasons.

Personal Life

Shandra is married to Antonina Evgenievna (born 1960). They have two sons, Andriy (born 1980) and Anton (born 1994).
