Leo Burnett Russia: Cannes Lions Success and Industry Insights

Leo Burnett Russia, a leading creative agency in Russia, made history as the first Russian agency in five years to win at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. This prestigious recognition has propelled the agency to new heights.

Cannes Lions Triumph

In 2010, Leo Burnett Russia's interactive campaign for WWF earned them a coveted Gold Lion. Additionally, their series of print ads for Lego "Transformers" captured a Bronze Lion. These accolades marked a significant shift for the agency.

"We realized that for a market the size of Russia, it was time to think bigger," explained Vladimir Tkachev, Executive Director of Leo Burnett Russia & Eastern Europe. "We believed in ourselves and knew that we could succeed on the international stage."

The Path to Cannes

Leo Burnett Russia's success was no coincidence. After organizational restructuring in 2006, the agency set its sights on Cannes Lions. They shifted their focus from local success to creating campaigns that resonated globally.

"We rejected the idea that Russian culture and humor were too unique to be understood internationally," said Tkachev. "If other countries could translate their local flavor into an international language, we could too."

Balancing Local and Global Goals

Despite their ambition for international recognition, Leo Burnett Russia remained committed to client objectives. "Our ultimate goal is to solve client problems," said Tkachev. "That includes creating campaigns that cut through the clutter and grab attention, regardless of whether it's for a local or global audience."

Cannes Lions Contenders

For the 2011 Cannes Lions, Leo Burnett Russia submitted four standout campaigns:

"Cow with a Soft Heart" print series for Wimm-Bill-Dann "Vesely Moloznik"

Innovative "freezing" concept for S7 Airlines targeting European tourists

"Save a Tree" mobile app for Google and WWF

"Head in the TV" interactive installation for Rostelecom's "Telekarta" service

Russian Agency Competitors

While Leo Burnett Russia respects its competitors, Tkachev believes that the agency industry in Russia requires greater collaboration. "We have a wealth of clients seeking efficient and effective advertising, but our production culture is underdeveloped," he noted.

The Changing Face of Video Advertising

Tkachev acknowledged the decline in the quality of video advertising in Russia. "The video genre is undergoing a transformation worldwide," he said. "The traditional separation between internet and television video is blurring, and new and exciting genres are emerging."

Russia's Global Perception

Tkachev sees Russia's advertising industry as having vast untapped potential. "The world recognizes our potential, but we are only now beginning to harness it," he said. "The rise of regional agencies proves that we can 'punch above our weight' and make our mark on the global stage."
