Early Life and Military Service
Born in Baku, Azerbaijan, Yaniv Antonovitch immigrated to Israel with his family at the age of 11. During the Second Intifada, he served as a sniper in the elite Duvdevan Special Forces Unit.
Film School and Debut Film
In 2008, Antonovitch graduated from the Sam Spiegel Film & TV School in Jerusalem with a B.F.A. His debut documentary, "In the Company of a Dead Cat," about Russian-speaking residents of a Tel Aviv park, won the award for Best Debut in Israeli Documentary Film.
Imprisonment for Civil Disobedience
In 2009, Antonovitch refused to pay a fine for walking his dog off-leash, opting instead for a 25-day jail sentence. This decision sparked controversy as the cost to the state of his imprisonment exceeded the original fine.
"Credit for Murder" and its Impact
Antonovitch's 2015 investigative documentary "Credit for Murder" exposed the involvement of Russian neo-Nazi groups in a double murder in a forest. His investigation led to criminal charges against Sergei Korotkikh for his role in the killing.
Connections to Ultra-Right Provocation
Antonovitch believes that Korotkikh was an agent provocateur within the ultra-right, seeking to gather evidence against Dmitry Rumyantsev, the leader of the National Socialist Society (NSO), to control the group before the 2008 presidential election.
Alleged Presidential Involvement
Antonovitch reportedly sent a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin about the murder, after which he was invited to testify before the Investigative Committee of Russia.
Recognition and Awards
