Early Life and Family
Voldemārs Akurāters was born on May 15, 1921, in Curitiba, Brazil, to Latvian schoolteacher parents. His father, a brother of the poet Jānis Akurāters, had emigrated to Brazil after being sentenced to death for participating in the 1905 Revolution. The family returned to Latvia in 1928.
Education and Early Career
Akurāters studied at the 2nd Daugavpils Gymnasium (1937-1940) and the acting studio of the People's Theater (1942-1944). He was drafted into the German army in 1944, but was captured and imprisoned. After his return from Moscow (1945-1946), he completed his acting studies at the A. Upītis Drama Theater Studio in 1948.
Theater Career
Akurāters was an actor at the A. Upītis Drama Theater (1947-1948) and the Liepāja Musical and Drama Theater (1949-1951). He was arrested and sent to exile in Siberia in 1951. After his release, he performed with the Valmiera Drama Theater (1955-1957) and the A. Upītis Drama Theater (1957-1966).
Film Career
Akurāters appeared in numerous films in a diverse range of roles across various Soviet studios. His notable works include "Derzość" (1971).
Personal Life and Death
Akurāters was married twice: first to art historian Livija Akurātere and then to writer Dagnija Zigmonte. He passed away on January 17, 1976, in Rīga, and was laid to rest at the Raiņa Cemetery.
