Birth and Early Years
Prince Vsevolod IV, nicknamed "Chermny" (the Red), was born in 1198 as the son of Svyatoslav Vsevolodovich, Prince of Chernigov.
Rise to Power and Conflict
In 1198, Vsevolod IV became Prince of Starodub, and in 1202, he ascended to the throne of Chernigov. He played an active role in the struggle for Kiev, initially allying with Rurik Rostislavich against Roman Galitsky, and later against Rurik himself. During this period, he frequently sought aid from the Polovtsians.
Great Prince of Kiev
In 1206, Vsevolod IV became Great Prince of Kiev, a position he held until 1207. After his nephew, Yaroslav of Novgorod, attempted to seize Galicia, Vsevolod expelled Rurik Rostislavich from Kiev and Yaroslav from Pereyaslavl, installing his son Mikhail in their stead. However, Rurik, aided by his sons and nephews, regained Kiev and Pereyaslavl, forcing Vsevolod to retreat.
In 1210, with the support of the Polovtsians, Vsevolod IV once again captured Kiev, driving Rurik into exile once more. This time, he retained the throne for two years.
Alliance with Vladimir-Suzdal and Marriage
To strengthen his position, Vsevolod forged an alliance with Vsevolod III, Prince of Vladimir-Suzdal. As a gesture of goodwill, he married his daughter Agafya to Vsevolod III's son, Yuri, who was later recognized as heir to the Vladimir throne.
Final Years and Death
In 1212, Rurik Rostislavich died in Chernigov, but Vsevolod's attempt to seize his lands was thwarted by Mstislav Udatny, who installed Ingvar Yaroslavich as ruler of Kiev. Vsevolod's younger brother, Gleb, is mentioned as Prince of Chernigov in 1215, suggesting that his reign ended around that time.
Family and Legacy
Vsevolod IV's wife, Maria-Anastasia, died in 1194, leaving him with four children:
