Vsevolod Mstislavich, Prince of Novgorod

Vsevolod Mstislavich, also known as Gabriel after his baptism, was the son of Mstislav Vladimirovich. In 1117, his father appointed him to rule Novgorod, where he remained until 1132.

Internal Conflicts and the Battle of Klin

Despite the initial support from Yuri Dolgoruky and the people of Novgorod, Vsevolod's reign was marked by internal conflicts. In 1131, he was defeated by the Chuds in the Battle of Klin. This defeat weakened his position in Новгород, leading to further unrest.

Uprising and Exile

In 1136, a major uprising erupted in Новгород. The citizens accused Vsevolod of attempting to trade Novgorod for Pereyaslavl-Zalessky and fleeing the battlefield during the Battle of Zhabche. Imprisoned for a time, Vsevolod was eventually expelled from the city. This event is often referred to as the "Revolution of 1136" and is considered a significant moment in the development of the Novgorod Republic.

Exile and Return to Pсков

After his exile, Vsevolod went to Kiev and was granted Vyшgorod by Yaroslav Vladimirovich. In the same year, an envoy sent by Prince Svyatoslav Olgovich to Novgorod was nearly killed by Vsevolod's supporters. Posadnik Konstantin Mikulchich traveled to Vyšgorod and persuaded Vsevolod to return to Pskov.

Death in Pskov

The people of Pskov welcomed Vsevolod as their prince, but upon hearing of his presence in Pskov, the people of Novgorod sent an army led by Svyatoslav. The army included Novgorod forces as well as Kuryans and Polovtsians from Svyatoslav's brother, Gleb. Despite pleas from the people of Pskov to avoid bloodshed, Vsevolod died in 1138, ending his reign as Prince of Pskov.
