Valery Mikhailovich Vorobyov (1948-present) is a renowned Russian scientist, writer, and public figure. As a prominent regional historian, his contributions have advanced the field of archaeology and sparked a deep understanding of his country's past.
Groundbreaking Archaeological Discoveries
In 1977, Vorobyov led the "Inventory of Monuments" research group and the Historical and Archaeological Expedition of the state university. Over the next decade, the team uncovered over 3,000 archaeological sites, setting a remarkable regional record in the Soviet Union. This work culminated in the Oblast Inventory of Archaeological Monuments, which the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR) recognized as a benchmark for other regions in Russia.
Educational and Cultural Initiatives
In 1996, Vorobyov and his team published "History of the Tver Region" for schools, marking the first regional history textbook in post-Soviet Russia. He also contributed to the inclusion of the Valdai Hills in the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of a collaboration with UNESCO and Greenpeace.
Digital Preservation of Historical Heritage
Vorobyov created a computerized database of all settlements in the Tver Oblast that had disappeared in the 19th and 20th centuries. He also prepared electronic versions of 36 toponymic dictionaries-reference books, covering each district of the Tver Oblast with a volume of over 250 authorial sheets. Remarkably, his database contains over 40,000 medieval personal names.
Ecological Advocacy and Global Collaborations
Vorobyov is an active advocate for environmental protection. He initiated the "European Universities on the Continental Watershed" association, promoting scientific monitoring and raising awareness about the ecological fragility of continental watersheds. As a member of the working group for the development of Russia's Ecological Doctrine, he advocates for international collaboration in education, cultural policy, and interdisciplinary research, particularly in areas related to ecology and sustainable development.
