Early Life and Martial Arts BeginningsVanderlei Cesar da Silva was born in Curitiba, Brazil, in 1976. At the tender age of 20, he embarked on his MMA journey. Silva initially honed his skills in Muay Thai, where he amassed an impressive record of 15 victories, all by way of knockout. His proficiency in the "Art of Eight Limbs" earned him two Brazilian Muay Thai Championships.
Transition to MMA and Dominance in PRIDE
Following his success in Muay Thai, Silva transitioned to MMA under the tutelage of Rudimar Fedrigo at Chute Boxe Academy in his hometown. To complement his striking prowess, he also studied Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with coach Cristiano Marcello and earned his black belt under Carlos Gracie Jr. in 2003.
In 1999, Silva captured the IVC Light Heavyweight Championship, setting the stage for his legendary career in the Japanese organization PRIDE. He reigned as Pride Middleweight Champion from 2001 to 2007 and emerged victorious in the 2003 PRIDE Middleweight Grand Prix.

Seeking a more intense training environment reminiscent of Chute Boxe, he established his own gym, The Wand Fight Team Training & Conditioning Center. Silva continued to train alongside former Chute Boxe coach Rafael Cordeiro.
Silva's performances in the UFC were met with critical acclaim. He earned the "Fight of the Night" bonus three times and the "Knockout of the Night" award three times. Notably, "Wrestling Observer Newsletter" named Silva the Fighter of the Year in both 2001 and 2004.
