Wes Bentley is an American actor and producer. He was born on September 4, 1978, in Jonesboro, Arkansas, USA. He is the son of Cherie and David Bentley and has three older brothers, Philip and Jamie, and a younger brother, Patrick. Bentley attended Sylvan Hills High School in Sherwood and the Juilliard School in New York City.
Early Career
During high school, Bentley was involved in the drama club and participated in local theater projects, including "Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," "La Cage aux Folles," and "Oliver." After completing high school, he moved to New York but quickly dropped out of drama school. During that time, Wes appeared in stage productions of "Henry IV, Part 1" and "The Weavers." He also worked as a waiter at TGI Friday's in Long Island.
Rise to Fame
Bentley's first on-screen role was in the independent drama "Three Below Zero" and he played a schoolteacher's nephew in Jonathan Demme's drama "Beloved." However, his breakthrough came in 2000 when director Sam Mendes cast him as Ricky Fitts in the critically acclaimed film "American Beauty." Bentley's portrayal of a drug-dealing film enthusiast who has a romantic relationship with his neighbor's daughter earned him several nominations and awards.
Continued Success
Following his success in "American Beauty," Bentley appeared in the comedy film "The White River Kid" alongside Antonio Banderas. He also starred in the western film "The Claim" with Milla Jovovich and Peter Mullan, the thriller "Soul Survivors" with Melissa Sagemiller, Eliza Dushku, and Luke Wilson, and the adventure film "The Four Feathers" directed by Shekhar Kapur. He took a break from acting for two years before returning in the sports drama "The Game of Their Lives" in 2005.
In the following years, Bentley appeared in various films including the thriller "The Ungodly," the comedy-drama "Weirdsville," and the thriller "Ghost Rider" alongside Nicolas Cage. He also starred in the horror film "P2."
Later Career
In 2008, Bentley appeared in the drama film "The Last Word" and the horror film "Edgar Allan Poe's Ligeia," in which he also served as a co-producer. He has been cast in upcoming films such as the thriller "Dolan's Cadillac" and the fantasy film "The Storyteller" in 2009.
Personal Life
Despite being raised Methodist, Bentley considers himself a Daoist, following the philosophy of Dao. This implies that he believes in moral behavior and a socially ordered life based on ethics.
