Biography of Whitey Bulger
Whitey Bulger, born James Joseph Bulger Jr., was an American gangster. He was born in 1929 in Dorchester, Massachusetts. His father, James Joseph Bulger, worked as a longshoreman and his mother, Jane Veronica McCarthy, struggled to make ends meet. Whitey was the oldest of three children and had a troubled childhood.
At the age of 10, Whitey ran away from home for the first time and by the age of 14, he was arrested for theft. He became involved in a street gang known as the "Shamrocks" and was eventually convicted for armed assault and robbery, serving time in a correctional facility. After his release in 1948, Whitey joined the U.S. Air Force and served until 1952.
In the 1950s, Whitey was again imprisoned, this time for armed robbery and hostage-taking. While in prison at Atlanta Penitentiary, he voluntarily participated in a CIA program called MK-ULTRA, where he and 18 other inmates were given LSD and other drugs as part of experiments. Whitey later claimed that he was deceived into participating and that the inmates believed they were developing a "schizophrenia cure." After serving 9 years, he was released.
Life of Crime
Whitey started working as a janitor but eventually turned to a life of crime again. He became an enforcer for criminal authority Donald Killeen and joined the Winter Hill Gang after Killeen's murder in 1972. Whitey quickly climbed the ranks and became the leader of the gang after the previous leader's imprisonment in 1979.
Under Whitey's leadership, the Winter Hill Gang was responsible for numerous murders in Boston. He was known for his cunning, ruthlessness, and involvement in drug trafficking, gambling, and loan-sharking. It is estimated that he was involved in 18 murders during this time.
Unbeknownst to his friends and associates, Whitey was also an informant for the FBI. This allowed him to eliminate many of his rivals as the authorities focused on other gang leaders. His brother, William M. Bulger, was a prominent politician and senator at the time.
Arrest and Imprisonment
In 1994, the public learned about Whitey's FBI informant status, leading to a major investigation. He managed to evade arrest until June 22, 2011, when he was apprehended in Santa Monica, California. Whitey and his girlfriend Catherine Greig were extradited to Massachusetts and taken into federal custody.
Whitey Bulger was incarcerated at the Plymouth County House of Correction in Plymouth, Massachusetts. At the age of 81, he faced charges for 19 murders and other crimes. His arrest marked the end of his 16-year-long fugitive life.
