Early Life and Education
Wilibald Gotlieb von Besser was born on July 7, 1774, in Innsbruck, Austria, to Samuel Gottlieb von Besser and Josepha von Lansenhofer. After losing his parents at a young age, he was raised by his uncle, Svibert Burkhart Schiwereke, a professor of botany at Lviv University.
Medical and Botanical Studies
Besser studied medicine and botany at Lviv University under the guidance of his uncle. After the university's closure in 1805, he moved to Kraków, where he continued his studies under Friedrich Hildebrandt in medicine and Joseph August Schultes in botany. He received his doctorate in medicine on December 31, 1807, and became an assistant in the clinic at Kraków University on April 15, 1808.
Floristic Explorations of Galicia
During his time in Lviv and Kraków, Besser amassed a vast collection of plants from the Galicia region. He also inherited Schultes' herbarium after his death in 1806. With Schultes' support, he began working on a comprehensive study of the Galician flora.
Professorship at Kremenets Gymnasium
In 1808, Besser accepted an offer to become Professor of Botany and Zoology at Kremenets Gymnasium in Volyn, Ukraine. He acquired Russian citizenship and agreed to teach in Polish. Before assuming his position, he traveled to Vienna to complete his work on the Galician flora, published in 1809 as "Primitia Florae Galiciae Ausriacae utriusque. Enchiridion ad excursiones botanicas."
Scientific Contributions
As a professor at Kremenets Gymnasium, Besser taught general biology, zoology, and botany, incorporating the latest scientific advancements. He embraced Lamarck's evolutionary ideas and became a pioneer in plant ecology. His lectures on the relationships between plants and their environment made a significant contribution to the field.
Membership and Legacy
Besser was elected as a corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences in 1835. He was also a member of the Moscow Society of Naturalists and the Leopoldina Academy of Natural Sciences in Bonn. His son, Viktor Vilibaldovich Besser, followed in his footsteps as a professor at the Medico-Surgical Academy.
Death and Recognition
Wilibald Gotlieb von Besser passed away on October 11, 1842, in Kremenets, leaving behind a legacy of pioneering research in botany and entomology. His contributions to the understanding of plant ecology and evolution continue to influence the scientific community today.
