Willard Frank Libby
Willard Frank Libby was an American physical chemist who received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1960 for his development of the carbon-14 dating method.
Early Life and Education
Libby was born in Grand Valley, Colorado, in 1908. He grew up on a ranch in northern California and attended local schools. He went on to study at the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry in 1931. He then pursued graduate studies in physical chemistry, earning his Ph.D. in 1933.
Radioactive Isotopes and Manhattan Project
As a graduate student, Libby investigated radioactive nuclei with low energies. He later joined the Manhattan Project during World War II, where he worked on the gaseous diffusion process for separating uranium isotopes necessary for the atomic bomb.
Carbon-14 Dating
After the war, Libby turned his attention to the study of cosmic rays. He theorized that cosmic rays produce radioactive carbon (carbon-14) in the atmosphere, which is absorbed by living organisms. After an organism dies, the carbon-14 decays at a known rate. This finding allowed Libby to develop a method for determining the age of organic materials based on their carbon-14 content.
Anthropological and Geological Applications
Libby's carbon-14 dating method has been instrumental in the fields of archaeology, anthropology, and geology. It has been used to date ancient artifacts, determine the age of geological strata, and study the evolution of climate and the environment.
Other Research
In addition to his work on carbon-14 dating, Libby also conducted research on tritium, atmospheric circulation, and environmental protection. He was a member of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission and the director of the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics at the University of California, Los Angeles.
Personal Life and Legacy
Libby married Leonore Lucinde Hickey in 1940. They had two daughters. Libby died in Los Angeles in 1980. He received numerous awards and honors, including the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, the Charles Frederick Chandler Medal, and the Willard Gibbs Medal. His legacy continues through his contributions to science and the advancement of scientific research.
