Biography of William F. Buckley Jr.
Early Life and EducationWilliam Frank Buckley Jr., an American writer, ideologist, and founder of the popular political magazine "National Review," was born on November 24, 1925, in New York City. He was the sixth of ten children in a family of Irish descent. As a young boy, Buckley moved with his family to Connecticut and then attended school in Paris, where he studied English, Spanish, and French. It was during this time that he developed a passion for sports, horseback riding, hunting, skiing, and writing about his interests and their significance in his life. At the age of thirteen, just before the outbreak of World War II, he enrolled at Catholic Beaumont College in England, where his family had taken in a young evacuee named Alister Horn, who would become a close friend.
Yale University and CIA
After the war, Buckley attended Yale University, where he excelled academically and became involved in activism. In 1950, he graduated with honors, and the following year, he began working for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
Political Career and National Review
In the early 1950s, Buckley started publishing books, and in the mid-1950s, he founded the conservative political magazine "National Review," of which he remained the editor-in-chief until 1990. In the 1960s, Buckley delved into politics and founded the conservative youth political group "Young Americans for Freedom." This marked the beginning of his active political and creative career.
Later Years
In the late 1980s, Buckley achieved significant influence, including gaining the favor of President Ronald Reagan. In the early 2000s, he continued his productive work, appearing on television, participating in debates, writing books, and engaging in various campaigns against alcohol and tobacco use. He worked until his last day, passing away in his office on February 28, 2008.
