Early Life and Military Career
Born in 1774 as the son of the Prime Minister, Bentinck embarked on a military career at a young age. He became a Governor in Madras at the age of 29.
The Vellore Mutiny

Leadership in Sicily
Bentinck subsequently played a crucial role in the defense of Sicily against Napoleon. As a liberal-minded Whig, he ensured the removal of King Ferdinand and the adoption of a British-style constitution.
Return to British Politics
Upon returning to England, Bentinck entered politics and declined an offer to return as Governor of Madras. By 1828, he had been appointed Governor-General of India.
Governor-General of India
During his tenure in India, Bentinck's primary objective was to promote Western liberal values and education. He worked closely with Thomas Macaulay to establish a system of public education.
Social Reforms and Suppression of Abuse
Bentinck initiated social reforms, including the abolition of Sati (widow self-immolation) and the suppression of the violent Thuggee cult.
Administrative Reforms and Unity
Bentinck introduced English as the official language in Indian courts, fostering unity under British rule. He also improved financial stability and implemented administrative reforms.
