Early Life and Military Career
General William John Codrington was born into a military family, the son of renowned British admiral Sir Edward Codrington. He inherited his father's passion for the military and entered the army as a young man.
Crimean War
During the Crimean War, Codrington commanded the 1st Brigade of the Light Division and participated in key battles, including the Battle of the Alma and the Battle of Inkerman. In June 1855, he led an unsuccessful assault on the Redan fortifications.
Command in Crimea
Following the recall of General Simpson, Codrington was appointed commander-in-chief of the British forces in Crimea. However, his appointment met with protest in England due to concerns about his military abilities. The war soon ended, leaving the question of his competency unanswered.
Political and Administrative Career
After returning to England, Codrington was elected to Parliament in 1857. However, he resigned his seat two years later to assume the governorship of Gibraltar, a post he held until 1865.
