Valeriano Weyler y Nicolau: A Military and Political Figure
Early Life and CareerBorn in Palma de Mallorca on September 17, 1838, Valeriano Weyler y Nicolau was the son of a German settler and a Spanish mother. He displayed military prowess early on, suppressing uprisings in the West Indies and commanding a division in Catalonia during the Carlist War.
Command in Cuba
In 1895, Weyler was appointed commander of Spanish forces in Cuba amidst the Cuban War of Independence. Despite his infamous brutality, he failed to quell the rebellion and was recalled in 1897. Ramón Blanco succeeded him in this role.
Minister of War
Returning to Spain, Weyler entered politics, joining Sagasta's cabinet as Minister of War in March 1901. In February 1902, he ruthlessly suppressed an insurrection in Barcelona. However, he resigned in December 1902 along with the entire cabinet.
Later Years
Elevated to the title of Marquis of Tenerife, Weyler spent his later years in relative seclusion. He passed away on October 20, 1930, in Madrid at the age of 92.
