Biography of William Mapother
William Mapother, an American actor, was born on April 17, 1965, in Louisville, Kentucky, USA. He is the son of Louise and William Reibert Mapother Sr. and is the cousin of famous actor Tom Cruise. Mapother has two sisters, Catherine and Emmy, both born in Louisville, Kentucky. His father was a lawyer and bankruptcy consultant, as well as a judge in Louisville between 1967 and 1970. William Reibert Mapother Sr. passed away on June 22, 2006, after battling lung cancer and pulmonary fibrosis.
Early Career and Acting
Mapother graduated from the University of Notre Dame, specializing in English language, and then taught at a middle school in East Los Angeles for three years. After a brief teaching career, William became widely known as an actor, portraying dark and eerie characters in movies. Although his notable performance in Todd Field's drama "In The Bedroom" was memorable, his most recognized appearance is his role as Ethan Rom in the television series "Lost". Despite being killed off in the first season, he appeared in later episodes through flashback scenes, totaling nine episodes.
Acting Career and Filmography
Throughout his acting career, William Mapother has had minor roles in various independent films, such as Sarah Kelly's "The Lather Effect" and Don Most's "Moola", as well as the film "Hurt", in which he acted alongside Melora Walters. He has also appeared in several television series, including "Touched by an Angel", "Law & Order", "C.S.I.", "Crossing Jordan", "C.S.I.: Miami", "NCIS", "Third Watch", "RoboCop", "Special Unit 2", "Threshold", "K-Ville", and "Viva Laughlin".
In 1989, Mapother worked as an assistant actor in Oliver Stone's biographical drama "Born on the Fourth of July", alongside his cousin Tom Cruise. In 1998, he appeared in the biographical sports film "Without Limits". He played a witness in Bernard Salzman's drama "The Unknown Cyclist" and in Josh Riddell's short film "Trickle". In 1999, he appeared once again alongside his cousin in Paul Thomas Anderson's drama "Magnolia". In 2000, he starred in John Woo's action film "Mission: Impossible II", and the following year, he took part in the crime action film "Swordfish".
In 2004, Mapother played the role of Matthew Williams in Takashi Shimizu's horror film "The Grudge". In 2005, he appeared in "Lords of Dogtown" and "The Zodiac". In 2006, he appeared in the video "Lost: Revelation", a chronicle dedicated to the popular series, and in Oliver Stone's drama "World Trade Center". In 2007, he portrayed the character Bob in Andrew Black's comedy "Moving McAllister". In 2008, he was part of Stephen Frears' drama "Skip Tracer" and J. T. Petty's western "The Burrowers".
Other Activities
In 1989, William Mapother completed courses in Scientology (a religious-philosophical teaching created by American science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard). However, unlike his cousin Tom Cruise, a devoted member of this "authoritarian sect", he has not appeared at such events since then.
In September 2007, William was elected to a three-year term on the National Board of Directors of the Screen Actors Guild.
