William Oughtred, an English mathematician, was born in Eton, Buckinghamshire (now Berkshire) in 1574 to a clerical family. He pursued his education at King's College, Cambridge, and was ordained as an Anglican priest in 1603. Upon receiving a benefice in Albury, near London, Oughtred resided in the parish for much of his life. Despite embarking on a theological career, his passion lay in mathematics. Oughtred became a prolific mathematician and educator, fostering the development of mathematical thought through rigorous teaching and correspondence with renowned scholars.

Invention of the Logarithmic Ruler

One of Oughtred's significant contributions was the invention of the Logarithmic Ruler in 1622. Based on the logarithmic scale pioneered by Edmund Gunter, Oughtred's innovation involved the use of two identical scales that slid along each other, allowing for direct computation. Prior to Oughtred's invention, Gunter's scale had to be meticulously measured using compasses, making calculations cumbersome. Seth Partridge later added a cursor and index line in 1662, completing the design of the Logarithmic Ruler, which served engineers and mathematicians for over 300 years until the advent of electronic calculators.

The Circular Logarithmic Scale

Oughtred's ingenuity extended to the development of the compact Circular Logarithmic Scale. This device featured ten scales that enabled multiplication, division, and the calculation of trigonometric functions. Oughtred's Circular Logarithmic Scale influenced several subsequent inventions and became widely acknowledged for its convenience and versatility.

Throughout his life, Oughtred maintained an extensive network of mathematical correspondents.
