Early Life and Career in Brazil
William Rocha Batista, a Brazilian striker, was born in São Paulo, Brazil. At the age of 16, he joined Portuguesa Santista Football Club, where he spent several years. In 2001, he moved to Europe, joining Bulgaria's Levski Sofia. However, an injury forced Batista to have surgery, and he was subsequently loaned to Spartak Pleven during the second half of the 2001-2002 season, scoring one goal.
Journey Through Europe
For the 2004-2005 season, Batista joined the Czech club Opava, scoring five goals in the first half of the season. During the winter break, he moved to Karpaty Lviv in Ukraine, which was then playing in the First League. His debut match for Karpaty was on March 17, 2005, against Arsenal Kharkiv.
Stardom in Ukraine
Batista excelled in the 2005-2006 Ukrainian Cup, scoring goals against Chernomorets Odessa (1-0) and Shakhtar Donetsk (1-0) to help his team reach the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively. Karpaty's run ended with a loss to Dynamo Kyiv, but Batista's performances sparked rumors of interest from Swiss club Thun, which had previously defeated Dynamo Kyiv in the Champions League qualifiers. Despite these rumors, Batista remained with Karpaty and helped the team finish second in the First League, earning promotion to the Premier League.
Success and Recognition
In the 2006-2007 season, Batista scored 10 goals, three behind the Ukrainian Premier League's top scorer, Oleksandr Gladkyy. In the summer of 2007, he was ranked 5th in football.ua's list of best players in the Ukrainian Premier League. Despite interest from Dynamo Kyiv, Batista extended his contract with Karpaty.
Moves to Kharkiv and Baku
In January 2008, Batista joined Kharkiv alongside Oleksiy Suchkov for 7.6 million hryvnias. He played 17 matches and scored three goals before being loaned to Azerbaijan's Baku with an option to buy in January 2009. In Baku, he played eight games and scored five goals, helping the team win the Azerbaijani Premier League.
Return to Karpaty
In August 2009, Batista signed a 1+2 contract with his former club Karpaty Lviv.
