Steig began his career as an illustrator in 1930 when he submitted his first drawing to The New Yorker magazine. Over the years, he created over 1650 drawings for the publication, with 170 of them appearing on the cover. Steig's illustrations often depicted street scenes and featured mischievous and lively characters.
In addition to his work as an illustrator, Steig also wrote and illustrated numerous children's books. His first children's book, "Roland the Minstrel Pig," was published in 1968.
