Kipketer's journey in athletics began in Kenya, where he showed great promise as a young runner. In 1990, he made a life-changing decision to move to Denmark and change his nationality to Danish. This decision meant that he had to miss the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.

In Denmark, Kipketer enrolled in the University of Copenhagen as part of a student exchange program. He instantly fell in love with the country and decided to make it his permanent home.
