Vincen Stychel Wytos: The Polish Leader and Statesman
Early LifeVincen Stychel Wytos was a prominent Polish politician born in Galicia, a region that was then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He joined the Polish People's Party in 1895 and became the leader of its "Piast" faction in 1913.
Political Career in Austria-Hungary
Wytos served as a member of the Galician Diet from 1908 to 1914 and the Austrian Reichsrat in Vienna from 1911 to 1918. He played a key role in the Polish Liquidation Commission in 1918.
Independent Poland
After Poland regained independence in 1918, Wytos became the leader of the Polish People's Movement "Piast" and a member of the Sejm from 1919 to 1920. He served as Prime Minister of Poland three times: in 1920-1921, 1923, and 1926. His last government was overthrown during Józef Piłsudski's May Coup.
Opposition and Exile
Wytos emerged as a leading opposition figure to the "Sanation regime" and became the head of the "Centrolew" coalition in 1929-1930. He was briefly imprisoned and subsequently exiled to Czechoslovakia in 1933. He returned to Poland in 1939.
World War II and Aftermath
During the German occupation of Poland, Wytos was under Gestapo surveillance. Despite his illness, he became one of the vice-chairmen of the Krajowa Rada Narodowa (National Council) in 1945.
