Winfred Dunn: From War Hero to Tennessee's 43rd Governor
Early Life and Military ServiceWinfred Dunn was born into a family of lawyers and politicians in Meridian, Mississippi. A graduate of Mississippi University (1950), he served as a lieutenant in the United States Air Force Reserve and as a sailor in the United States Navy during World War II.
Professional and Political Beginnings
Dunn worked in insurance and earned a doctorate in medicine from the University of Tennessee. As a practicing dentist in Memphis, he made a run for the Tennessee House of Representatives in 1962 but lost. Undeterred, he became chairman of the Shelby County Republican Party and supported Barry Goldwater's presidential campaign in 1964.
Election to Governor
In 1970, Dunn ran for Governor of Tennessee as a Republican. Defeating Democrat John Jay Hooker by 59,000 votes, he made history as the first Republican governor of Tennessee since 1869.
Governing Tennessee
Dunn aimed to unite Tennessee's political parties, appointing Republicans and Democrats. With Ned McWherter as Speaker of the House in 1972, collaboration took hold. Dunn raised the sales tax, boosting road construction and government salaries. He also created the Department of Economic and Community Development, the Department of General Services, and reorganized the Department of Personnel.
Notable Achievements
Dunn's governorship was marked by the ratification of the 28th Amendment, which lowered the voting age to 18 (1971). He and his wife, Betty Pritchard (m. 1950), had three children: Charles, Gail, and Julie. His father, Obert Dunn, served in the United States House of Representatives.
Legacy
Winfred Dunn passed away on September 28, 2024, at the age of 98. His legacy as a pioneer of Republican governance and a champion of bipartisanship lives on in Tennessee history.
