Winston Groom
Early Life and EducationWinston Groom, an acclaimed American novelist and nonfiction author, was born in Washington, D.C. However, he spent his formative years in Mobile, Alabama. Groom attended University Military School, a preparatory institution that has since been renamed UMS-Wright Preparatory School.
He then matriculated at the University of Alabama, where he became an active member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity and the Army ROTC program. Groom graduated from the university in 1965.
Military Service and Career in Literature
Upon graduating, Groom embarked on a four-year military career. He served in the United States Army from 1965 to 1969, including a tour of duty in Vietnam.
After completing his military service, Groom immersed himself in the world of literature. He has written several novels and nonfiction works, the most notable being "Forrest Gump," published in 1986. The novel became a bestseller and was later adapted into a highly successful film in 1994.

Winston Groom currently resides in two locations: Point Clear, Alabama, and Long Island, New York.
