Włodzimierz Czarzasty: A Life in Politics and Business
Early Life and EducationWłodzimierz Czarzasty was born on May 3, 1960 in Warsaw, Poland. He earned a degree in Journalism and Political Science from the University of Warsaw, where he served as the Chairman of the Students' Association.
Entry into Politics
In 1983, Czarzasty joined the Polish United Workers' Party, remaining a member until 1989. He subsequently joined the Civic Movement "Democratic Action" in 1989.
Radio and Television Career
Prior to 1998, Czarzasty was a member of the Supervisory Board of Polish Radio. In 1999, he was appointed by President Aleksander Kwaśniewski as a member of the National Media Council, where he served as Secretary from 2000 to 2004.
Early Political Career
In 1997, Czarzasty unsuccessfully ran for the Sejm (Polish Parliament) as part of the Democratic Left Alliance coalition. In 2006, he was elected Chairman of the "Ordynacka" Association, a position he held until 2017.
Allegations and Controversy
In 2002, Czarzasty was implicated in the so-called Rywin Affair, but no charges were ever brought against him.
Rise in the Democratic Left Alliance
Czarzasty joined the Democratic Left Alliance in 2010. From 2012 to 2016, he led the Mazowieckie region of the party. In 2016, he was elected Chairman, succeeding Leszek Miller.
The Formation of Lewica
In 2019, Czarzasty co-founded the "Lewica" coalition with Robert Biedroń and Adrian Zandberg to contest the parliamentary elections. He was elected to the Sejm, receiving 31,244 votes.
Co-Chairmanship of New Left
In 2021, Czarzasty and Biedroń founded New Left, a new political party. Czarzasty became its Co-Chairman.
Entrepreneurial Activities
In the 1990s and 2000s, Czarzasty was involved in business ventures, including owning the "Muza" publishing house with his wife and co-owning the "Wilga" publishing house.
