Biography of U I
U I is a member of the Politburo of the Chinese Communist Party and a Vice Premier of China. She was listed by Forbes as one of the 100 most powerful women in the world, with only Condoleezza Rice, the Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs, ranking higher on the list.
Early Career and Political Rise
U I, a 66-year-old woman, entered the world of politics almost a quarter of a century ago. She exudes confidence, expertise, and energy. In a surprising move in 1988, she was appointed as the Vice Mayor of Beijing. Notably, prior to this appointment, U I worked in an industry where women were rarely seen - she served as the Deputy Director of the Yangshan Petrochemical Plant near Beijing. She obtained her higher education in 1962, graduating from the Beijing Petroleum Institute. It is possible that her experience in a predominantly male field shaped her character, earning her the nickname "Iron Lady."
No Connections and Ministerial Appointments
Interestingly, when she was transferred to the capital, U I had no connections with the Beijing nomenklatura, which readily accepts bribes in red envelopes. In 1994, she was appointed as the Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations. In 2002, she became a member of the Politburo of the Chinese Communist Party and a year later, she was appointed as a Vice Premier and Minister of Health. She was assigned to this "frontline" position after a outbreak of atypical pneumonia in the country. With a firm hand, U I brought order to the healthcare sector and put an end to negligence.
