Early Life and Career
Dino Grandi was born in Mordano, Italy, and pursued studies in economics and law at the University of Bologna. He graduated in 1919, having interrupted his studies for military service during World War I. Grandi established himself as a lawyer in Imola and first encountered Benito Mussolini in 1914.
Rise in the Fascist Ranks
Grandi joined the Blackshirts and became one of the initial 38 Fascist deputies in Italy. He formed part of the "Quadrumvirate" that led the March on Rome in 1922, solidifying the establishment of the Fascist regime.
Government Roles
After the Fascist takeover, Grandi held several government positions, including Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior and Foreign Minister (1929-1932). He was appointed ambassador to Great Britain from 1932 to 1939, followed by Minister of Justice from 1939 onwards. King Victor Emmanuel III honored him with the title of Count of Mordano.
Opposition to Mussolini
As Italy's defeat in World War II loomed, Grandi organized a meeting of the Fascist Grand Council in 1943. The council voted to remove Mussolini from power (19 votes to 7), leading to the immediate dissolution of the Fascist Party. Grandi's loss of both party leadership and government position marked the end of his political influence.
Exile and Return
Sentenced to death in absentia by the German-backed Italian Social Republic, Grandi fled to Spain in August 1943. He subsequently resided in Portugal from 1943 to 1948 and then spent his later years in Brazil until the late 1960s. Grandi returned to Italy towards the end of his life.
