Biography of Ksenia of Petersburg
Ksenia Grigoryevna Petrova, also known as Ksenia of Petersburg, was born around 1719 and passed away around 1794-1806. She was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1988. Unlike many other saints, the approximate years of Ksenia's life and death are known, and her tombstone bears an epitaph.
Early Life and Marriage
Ksenia Grigoryevna Petrova was married to Colonel Andrei Fyodorovich Petrov, who served as a singer at the imperial court, until the age of twenty-six. Being married to a court singer was considered prestigious during that time, and the everyday life of the young couple, who were close to the imperial court, was no different from that of other affluent families. Ksenia herself was talented in singing and music and managed the household impeccably. They lived a comfortable life, and there was no indication of any imminent tragedy.
A Tragic Loss and Transformation
However, Ksenia's life took a tragic turn when her beloved husband Andrei Fyodorovich suddenly passed away without repentance or communion. This sudden loss shook Ksenia to her core and completely transformed her perception of the world, life, and death. She left her home, declaring that she no longer existed in this world and that the soul of her beloved husband, whom she had lost so quickly, continued to live within her. Instead of blaming God with curses, she accepted His will with humility.
A Life of Renunciation
Ksenia renounced her material possessions by giving her rich and well-maintained home to a destitute acquaintance named Parasha. The grateful girl fell to her knees, kissing Ksenia's hands, and asked where she would live now. Ksenia responded with a cryptic phrase: "Under His protection, the birds of heaven. They neither sow nor reap. I am no worse than a bird of heaven. Let His will be done."
A Life of Devotion and Miracles
Ksenia began living as a wanderer, completely detached from worldly possessions. She roamed the streets of St. Petersburg in all weather conditions. At first, children would mock her, but when they saw her climbing hills, praying and bowing in all four directions, they were astonished. They began shouting, "Blessed, blessed!" It seemed that Ksenia was carried by the wings of heavenly angels. People began to listen to her words and follow her advice, which often turned out to be prophetic.
Patroness of St. Petersburg
After Ksenia's death, the people of St. Petersburg considered her their patroness. To preserve her grave, her followers rebuilt the tombstone multiple times, as people would chip away pieces as souvenirs. A well-trodden path surrounds her chapel, which is never covered in snow, and the walls are smooth from the touch of thousands of hands. A fluffy tri-colored cat can often be seen near the chapel. Ksenia had a fondness for such animals, and those who visit her chapel try to pet and feed the cat, which is friendly to everyone.
Despite her frail appearance, Ksenia led a life of extraordinary devotion and sanctity for 42 years. Her prayers brought happiness to countless marriages and warmth to many homes. The quiet prayers, such as those of Elina, filled with sorrow and incomprehensibility, seemed to reach her. Does Ksenia of Petersburg hear them? Perhaps, as evidenced by the well-trodden path, the living flowers, and the perpetual lamp inside the chapel.
