Early Life and Introduction to Rowing

Xeno Müller's journey in rowing began at age 13 in France. Inspired by a friend's jest about his large hands, Müller took to the sport with enthusiasm. Born on August 7, 1972, in Zurich, Switzerland, Müller grew up in various countries including Germany and Spain.

Collegiate and International Success

After demonstrating promise at the 1990 World Junior Championships, Müller joined the rowing team at Brown University in the United States. He excelled in the university's 8-man crew. However, he narrowly missed qualifying for the 1992 Olympic final in the single sculls by just 0.85 seconds.

In 1993, Müller competed in the World Championships in the pair oars but again failed to reach the final. Determined to improve, he left the university team, where he faced restrictions on single sculls training.

Olympic Triumph and Silver Medal Success

Müller's breakthrough came in 1994 when he claimed the World Cup title and a silver medal at the World Championships in the single sculls. At the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Müller trailed at the 1000m mark but surged ahead in the final 500m for a stunning gold medal victory.

After the Olympics, Müller briefly retired from the sport but returned in 1998 to earn a silver medal at the World Championships. He repeated this feat in 1999. At the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Müller again won silver, this time behind New Zealand's Rob Waddell.

Retirement and Return

After the 2000 Olympics, Müller reduced his training workload, leading to a fifth-place finish at the 2001 World Championships. In 2002, he officially retired from the sport. However, in a surprising twist, Müller announced his return to the elite level in 2003, aiming to compete in the 2004 Olympics in Athens.

Personal Life and Legacy

Married with two children, Müller resides in Costa Mesa, California. He speaks English, German, French, and Spanish. Despite his athletic achievements, Müller cherishes his family and personal life above all else. While rowing played a significant role in his life, he believes that there is more to life than sports.

Upcoming Challenges

Müller's return to the Olympic stage sets the stage for an intriguing single sculls race at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. His experience and determination make him a formidable competitor, ensuring that the race will be one to watch.
