Early Life and Personal Background
Xu Jiayu, a renowned Chinese swimmer, was born in Wenzhou, Zhejiang. His mother, Yu Zhenzhen, was a former professional swimmer specializing in the butterfly stroke. Xu has an elder sister named Xu Si. Xu began his swimming journey at the tender age of four, under the guidance of his mother. Xu is a graduate of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
Olympic Achievements
Xu's Olympic debut came at the 2012 London Olympics. However, his breakthrough moment arrived at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where he claimed a silver medal in the 100-meter backstroke. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Xu secured another silver in the mixed 4x100-meter medley relay. He repeated his silver medal performance in the 100-meter backstroke at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Notably, Xu also won his first Olympic gold in the men's 4x100-meter medley relay at the 2024 Games.
International Success
Xu's impressive performances extend beyond the Olympics. At the 2014 Asian Games, he contributed to China's gold medal in the men's 4x100-meter medley relay. Individually, he earned silver medals in both the 100- and 200-meter backstroke, along with a bronze in the 50-meter backstroke.
2017 World Championships:Xu made history as the first Chinese swimmer to win the gold medal in the men's 100-meter backstroke, clocking in at 52.44 seconds. He also took home a bronze as part of the mixed medley relay team.
2018 Asian Games:Xu's dominance continued with a remarkable six gold medals. He triumphed in the backstroke events and played a significant role in Asia's record-breaking performances in the mixed and men's medley relays.
2019 World Championships:Xu successfully defended his 100-meter backstroke title, touching the wall in 52.43 seconds. He also finished sixth in the 50-meter backstroke.
National and World Records
Xu currently holds the Chinese national recordsin all backstroke distances: 50, 100, and 200 meters. From 2018 to 2020, he held the world recordin the 100-meter short course backstroke.
