Commandant of the Marine Corps (1999-2003)
In 1999, President Bill Clinton appointed Jones as the 32nd Commandant of the Marine Corps. As Commandant, he oversaw a period of modernization and transformation for the Marine Corps.
Supreme Allied Commander Europe (2003-2006)
In 2003, Jones was appointed Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), becoming the first Marine Corps General to hold this position. He led NATO forces during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
