Early Life and Education
Jagutil Mishiev was born on March 29, 1927, in Krasnaya Sloboda. Due to a shortage of educators, he was enrolled in teacher training courses at the age of 16 and began teaching at a school in 1943. In 1944, he graduated from a pedagogical college in Guba, Azerbaijan, and in 1947, he earned a diploma in Physics and Mathematics from the Quba Teachers' Institute.
Career as a Teacher and Historian
In 1951, Mishiev's family moved to Derbent, Dagestan. From 1954 onwards, he taught Math at Evening School No. 1 and in 1963, he graduated from the Dagestan State Pedagogical Institute with a degree in Mathematics teaching. He also served as the director of the Local History Museum from 1952 to 1968, collecting unique historical materials about Derbent.
Contributions to the Derbent Local History Museum
Under Mishiev's leadership, the Local History Museum in Derbent was revitalized. He created an innovative exhibition and gathered valuable historical information by researching local archives and collaborating with academic institutions. His expertise made the museum a resource for scholars and the public alike.
Books and Publications
After moving to Israel in 1997, Mishiev authored several books on the history of Derbent, including "Road Length of Five Thousand Years" and "Derbent and World Civilization." He also compiled a "Russian-English Dictionary of Mathematical Terms" and conducted genealogical research resulting in the book "Our Roots." His final work, "Only Memory Doesn't Age," explored the history of Jewish civilization.
Legacy and Recognition
Jagutil Mishiev passed away on April 2, 2024, at the age of 97. His contributions to the education, preservation, and dissemination of Derbent's history have left a lasting impact on the community. He was awarded the title of Honored Teacher of the Republic of Dagestan and the Russian Federation for his dedicated service.
